If we are frustrated about the injustice which happens to and within our ummah- from Syria to Kashmir, from Nigeria to our communities here in the U.S. and everywhere in-between, we need to look internally first.
If cheating is acceptable to us, we need no longer wonder why heads of Muslim majority countries cheat on their people. If it's okay for us to lie through our teeth when speaking to our parents, we shouldn't be baffled when Muslim politicians lie to their nations. If we make things more important than salah, there's little wonder why Muslim leaders don't take their relationship with God and the fact they will be accountable to Him about their treatment of the vulnerable seriously.
If it's all good for us to make racist jokes and set racist rules for who our children may marry or who we consider welcome in our communities, we shouldn't be shocked when governments oppress one group of people more than another.
We're already doing the very same sorts of injustices on a micro-level. Don't we see? I am one person. You're another. Multiply our mistakes by over a billion and the result is the current state of the ummah. YES those in power should be responsible and we HATE their transgressions and pray against such oppression and beg God to bring justice back to this ummah and protect the innocent, ya Rabb.
We absolutely need to be lobbying, protesting, educating, doing the work externally necessary to bring change.
But we need to also look internally at our own selves. We must stop oppressing our own souls. We need to collectively hold ourselves accountable to God with the moral standards we expect from others, even when no one is watching- but Him.
If it isn't a priority for yourself personally to make necessary changes, then don't do it for yourself- do it for the ummah.
