I’ve had a long-standing love affair with Greece ever since I came here as a child almost four decades ago, and I’m always struck by the warmth and generosity of its people.
This morning I had the privilege of speaking with just some of the amazing people who are using Facebook Groups to build and strengthen communities in Greece at our Facebook Communities Day. And I was so impressed by Amelie Franjeskou and Eftychia Koumatzaki, who are the admins of the Lifeguard Hellas Save & Rescue Volunteer Team @lifeguardhellas .The team of professional and volunteer lifeguards look after the waters near the border with Turkey. In just two years they have helped 18,000 refugees safely reach the shore. As if that’s not enough, the Group also runs swimming lessons for refugees, helping them learn how to stay safe in the future.
Amelie and Eftychia’s story is one of many I’ve heard today about how people are using Groups for good – whether that’s to rally around an important mission, or to share hobbies and interests. If you’re a sailor, vegan or fan of 80s music there’s a Group for you too! And we’ll keep listening to you, to better understand how we can continue to help you bring the world closer together.
