Dorothée Pullinger was an automobile engineer credited for designing the first car built specifically for women. She was also the first female member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers and a founding member of the Women’s Engineering Society. A true pioneer for future generations of women looking to reach the top of careers in science, engineering and technology. But only last week Tech City UK found just 21% of those aged between 15 and 16 who aspire to work in technology are female. And that’s why it’s so important we take time, not just on #IWD2018 but every day, to champion female role-models who act as inspiration for others.
We’re calling on people around the world to ‘Credit Her’ – a campaign that spotlights remarkable women from the past and present who have had a positive impact on their lives and in their communities. It could be a trailblazer like Dorothée, or some of the other incredible women featured in the video below, who has been an inspiration. It could be a mentor at work who has shared advice, or a friend who has pushed you to follow your dreams – we all have women in our lives who deserve a thank you.
And to continue our commitment to female empowerment, as part of our #SheMeansBusiness programme we’re launching an updated hub and a Community Finder tool to help connect women in small business communities across the world – to better enable them to come together as peers to help each other to grow their businesses.
Last year, International Women’s Day was the most talked about moment on Facebook. This year I’m hoping will be even bigger, as we celebrate the women in our lives and continue the conversation about how we can work together to achieve equality.
